Supporting sustainable, high-quality trails across the Snowshoe Highlands is central to SHARC Trails’ mission. When opportunities arise to work on the Green Bank Observatory (GBO) Trails, our crew is always eager to lend a hand. During the 2025 season, SHARC Trails completed two dedicated workdays on the GBO trail system, helping ensure these trails remain durable, enjoyable, and accessible for all users.
Our first workday at GBO focused on establishing a new trail grade to serve as the entrance to the Brant Canyon Trail. After assessing the existing alignment, our crew determined the original entrance was too steep and needed to be relocated several feet uphill to create a more sustainable grade. Using standard hand tools, the crew cut approximately 150 yards of new tread, improving both durability and user experience.

The second workday at GBO focused on completing improvements to the Deer Creek Trail that were initiated by the local trail club, Pocahontas Trails, in collaboration with the Cheat Mountain Salamanders NICA team. While their efforts resulted in significant improvements to the trail, a few remaining sections still needed attention. SHARC Trails stepped in to finish this work, helping bring the project to completion and further enhance the trail’s sustainability and rideability.
